The prospect of a global economic recovery, the slowdown of the European financial and debt crisis, as well as the expansionary monetary policies of the major central banks led to high growth rates on the international stock markets.

The DAX increased by 25%; the Euro Stoxx 50 gained 18% for the year. The European Dow Jones Stoxx 600 index ended the year up by 17%. In this index, the health care sector gained 21%. The leading U.S. indices also performed well: The S & P 500 closed with a gain of 30%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 27%.
